QOTD: Would you rather hear the voice of dead people or only see their ghosts?

I received an Advanced Readerā€™s Copy of this book from the publisher and Caffeine Book Tours as part of my participation in their tour. The review I give is my own and is not influenced.

š—¦š˜†š—»š—¼š—½š˜€š—¶š˜€:

What happens when an ominous phenomenon forces peopleā€™s negativity to manifest into demonic creatures called Umbra Shades that spread Apathy Syndrome to its victims? In a violent and corrupted world ruled by negative intentions, a seventeen-year-old girl with the ability to purge these demons wants nothing more than a better tomorrowā€¦ But will she be able to protect her loved ones and save humanity with it?

š—„š—²š˜ƒš—¶š—²š˜„:

The story starts with Hira Night and her boyfriend being stopped by a cop who finds Alessander, her boyfriend and an African-American, suspicious. He was shot, and then a white beam of light, flung her backwards and she was unconscious. When she woke up, she could see the negative emotions of people, what she called Umbra Shades, a whole creature in their own, and she took it up on herself to destroy these things.

I loved the representation of LGBTQ+ people, and how strongly it voiced the injustices occurring against the minority of black people. But the story itself was pretty slow at the beginning. I loved the idea that the author had, and how she used it in the story, but the story itself felt as though it was very slow until the last few chapters. Those, I enjoyed a lot.

Regardless of that, the story spoke about many important matters, and I liked how it represented the real world, starting from the bullying and to other grave prejudices. I loved how the author incorporated negative emotions and the like into Umbra Shades, and the idea of Apathy Current was very new and very fresh.

The plot was smooth going, although a bit slow at times but it was interesting nonetheless. The characters of Hira and Helen were good, but I felt that Alessander was a bit generic. The character arc of Hira and Helen grew only in the way that they were more knowledgeable, and more badass in the end, and it was amusing and nice. I loved the last part, it was filled with fast action and I cannot wait to start with the sequel. For a debut book, this exceeded all my expectations.

I would rate it: 4ļøāƒ£.0ļøāƒ£5ļøāƒ£/šŸ”Ÿ
